Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti

The following information is provided by Wylie Wagg. We are not working with ARCH in any way but are trying to raise awareness for this worthy cause:

In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, it has been heartwarming to see how charitable and kind people can be. It is understandable and even necessary, at a time like this, for people to intensely focus on the human population and place less emphasis on the animals in need. So many people who visit our website are animal lovers, however, that we thought we should provide information about what is happening to -- and what can be done for -- the animals that are suffering.

The good news is that some of the foremost humane organizations on the planet have joined forces to answer this call. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) have formed the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH). The two lead organizations are joined by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the American Humane Association, Humane Society International, United Animal Nations (UAN), Kinship Circle, Best Friends Animal Society, and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF).

Most of the Haitian animal population is agricultural, with approximately five million livestock. Additionally, there are many, many abandoned and/or wounded companion pets as well as a very large population of stray dogs who are in critical need.

Recently, the Government of Haiti officially requested assistance from the WSPA. Following that request, representatives from ARCH planned to arrive in Haiti to begin treating injured pets, livestock and stray animals. Additionally, they will be vaccinating animals to control the spread of disease. They will provide desperately needed food and clean water as well.

Animals and humans are in Haiti, as in all places on this Earth, deeply connected. While the human crisis clearly mandates immediate and focused attention, addressing the animals’ suffering will help not only the animals but also the people who live with and among them.

This effort is in very early stages because the initial response had to be on assessing and addressing the human situation. At this time, however, ARCH is working tirelessly to bring care and comfort to the animals.

All of the participating organizations have information about ARCH on their websites. As you can imagine, donations of cash and supplies are badly needed. And, as with the human relief effort, every little bit helps.
